“The Implications of Clonal Genome Evolution for Cancer Medicine” by Samuel Aparicio and Carlos Caldas The article is meant to appeal to a given audience and not just the general population as the language applied is quite technical and not appealing to all. As such, it is filled with technical terms that can only be understood by certain people from the medical field and those that have advanced biological knowledge, as most of the concepts, if not all, are lost on everyone else. The target audience is meant to have experience in advanced genetics in order to comprehend the machinations of genetics in the heredity of cancer and how somatic heterogeneity affects the same development of cancer in individuals. As a result, the article goes as far as applying technical terms such as stem lines and clonal structures in an attempt to get the information needed out to the audience. This means that aside from the expected level of scientific or rather biological expertise, the author writes with the belief that all those interested in his article are competent enough to not require a definition of terms. This works pretty well as the author does not define any of the terms in the article, as most of them are not found in conventional English, which brings us back to the concept of technical language meant for a technically competent audience. As such, the audience is meant to have expertise in genetics and cancerous developments that affect somatic cells of animals based on the genetic and evolutional traits of the animal in question. The target audience is further seen in the heading of implications for clinical oncology, where one target audience is made clear or apparent to the reader: they are pathologists who need to understand how the information found in the article can be applied for cancer patients, and even find applications for treatment of cancer (Aparicio and Caldas 845). This is to mean that it goes a step further to target doctors and researchers in medicine and genetics to comprehend the issues at hand in order to see how they can be helped or applied for cancer patients. In regard to the author’s authority, the article seems to display plenty in that the author speaks with a strong sense of authority in genetics based on the lingo applied to deliver the content, which is a non-hesitant flow of word after word, which all show how much interest the author has. As such, the authors express their interest in the issue following the efforts that have been made in the field of medicine in order to inch closer to some form of treatment and understanding of cancer and its implications. With this in mind, the article shows how much the authors have gone through in order to deliver the content, which is further proof of their vested interest in the subject of evolution and cancer for the audience to pay attention. In addition, the authors show their level of knowledge of the topic at hand in that it is pretty fluent going by the information presented on the past, present and future application of genetics in the treatment of cancer. The above implies that the authors have a huge bank of knowledge of the issue. This is a fact that is difficult to refute as even the terms applied in the article only ooze competence in the field by even the comparisons made between certain aspects of cells as found in the research work. Such a thing can only be done by a person with adequate knowledge on the issues at hand, and not anyone who thinks they have adequate information on the topic, which is the case with this article. In order to appeal to the emotions of the audience, the authors apply a number of strategies that come in handy to content delivery. As such, the authors apply facts and the informative nature of the article to appeal to the audience in that, by being based on a science subject, it brings forth information directly. In relation to this, the article does not leave the audience to seek the important point for themselves but instead, contains every kind of information that the audience would need to comprehend. The pathos of the article begins with direct statement of the motive or goals of the article and graduates to the evolution of cancer, which is presented with facts about evolutionism, and then goes further to make deductions of the implications of the history to modern times. With this in mind, the entire article appeals to the interest and attention of the audience by ensuring that all relevant information is applied and given without the audience struggling to comprehend. In addition, the article is created with a specific target audience in mind, which means that those who fail to understand the information that is well organized and delivered are not part of the target audience. The other part of conscious persuasion by the authors lies in the presentation of empirical evidence to back the facts presented in the article. The data includes figures and diagrams that prove the relationship between clonal evolution and clonal relationships, which serves towards being more convincing to the audience, as it shows how credible the information presented is, especially to an audience that is knowledgeable (Aparicio and Caldas 843). In addition, the target audience is known to require evidence of the nuances presented, in which case the authors go as far as applying credible sources within the article in order to be more convincing and appealing to the emotions of the audience. Further, there is application of information that is of a most recent nature in order to remain at the top of time and information without being outdated, where the authors incorporate recent studies by other parties in the same field. In conclusion, the article applies a high level of strategic persuasive measures to see to it that its content is delivered appropriately and to the desired audience. As such, the article has plenty of technical knowledge by the authors, which is then backed by facts with empirical evidence as well as credible references at the end.
