The paper “Olympic Games in Beijing as an Example of Large-Scale Event on the Urban Environment” is a thrilling example of a management dissertation. The research aimed at analyzing the impacts of large-scale events on the urban environment and the countermeasures available for addressing any adverse scenario by taking the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games as an example. Qualitative research methodology has been considered in this study, focusing on collecting secondary data from scholarly-based journals, books, online reports, and articles.

Based on the findings of the study, large-scale events such as Olympic Games impose both positive and negative impacts on the urban environment of the host nations. For instance, the conduct of the 2008 Olympic Games positively influenced the urban environment of Beijing by developing infrastructural facilities and sewage systems among others. However, traffic congestion and declined air quality caused during the event negatively impacted Beijing’s urban environment. In order to mitigate these negative impacts, the Chinese government adopted the countermeasures of promoting recycle and reuse concept and using The Solar Thermal Hot Water System that in turn facilitated China to be the next contender of hosting the Olympic Games in the upcoming years.

Chapter 1: Introduction1.1. Research Background Gaining momentum of urbanization, growing population, and augmenting dependence over science and technologies over the preceding few years have significantly contributed to the environmental issues witnessed in the current phenomenon (Flower, 2006). It is believed that the conduct of large-scale events, including Olympics and Commonwealth Games among others, has both positive and negative impacts not only on the urban environment but also in social, financial, and political dimensions.

Large-scale events also acknowledged as mega-events are denoted as major competitions that hold a great appeal, bring extensive interests and ensure global significance. The principal characteristics of these events are the capacity to attract huge figures of national along with international visitors and the imposition of considerable impacts on social, cultural, financial, and urban environmental factors of the host cities.
