Name: Instructor’s Name: Course: University: Wimax- The Next Generation of Broadband Wireless Access Abstract: The purpose of the topic is to bring out a clear description as to why Wimax will be the future of the broadband and wireless access. This is a form of discussion where all the points are shown which favors the forming of Wimax as the most prominent wireless network in the latest times. Wimax is the hottest network technology that has come up in the recent times for the development of the broadband and wireless connectivity. There have been many questions arising for the acceptance of the Wimax as the most eminent and the best wireless network and broadband service in the near future and that there no other service which is closer to Wimax. But all these questions have been answered with the facts that have been provided in the discussion. Thus the main purpose and the main objective of the discussion is to prove the validity of the fact that the next generation of the broadband wireless network will be taken over by Wimax. Wimax is commonly defined as the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (1) by the forum of Wimax. The forum of Wimax was formed in the month of June in 2001 in order to promote the interoperability and conformance of the IEEE 802.16 standard which is known as the wireless man, officially. The forum has been describing the Wimax as the technology that is standard based and which enables the last mile delivery of the wireless broadband access as a form of an alternative to the DSL and the cable. People have been saying that the Wimax is not only a technology but in fact a mark of certification or an approval stamp which is given to such equipments which are able to meet the conformity and the interoperability tests for the family of standards of the IEEE 802.16. The kind of bandwidth and the reach that Wimax has makes it very suitable for the potential applications like: Providing of a wireless alternative or a wireless option in place of the DSL and the cable for the last kilometer of the broadband access. Providing for a connection of the Wi-Fi hotspots with one another and also to various other parts of the internet. Providing of a very high speed in the telecommunications and the mobile data services. There have been various companies who are trying their luck at examining and trying to provide Wimax for the connectivity of the last mile at the rates of high data. This trial by the various companies could prove to be beneficial for the customers as there is a chance of the lowering of the prices for the wireless network both for the domestic as well as the official purpose. The areas where there is no existence of the telephone or the cable networks from the earlier times, the Wimax would prove to be a very useful and economic wireless technology there. There has not been available any kind of economic access to the broadband which can be adopted, but with the coming up of the Wimax this has also become possible and all the customers now can enjoy a very good speed of the wireless and broadband technology with lower costs. Before the coming up of the Wimax, the operators used the fixed wireless technologies, which have the proprietary rights attached to them, for the broadband services. There are several manufacturers who make available the various indoor and the outdoor versions of Wimax. There is the convenience of the customer using the Wimax self install units which can be used indoors but for that the subscriber has be closer to the base station of Wimax rather than closer to the installed units which are professional. It is a fact that cannot be denied that the indoor installation is a costly process because of the high infrastructure investment and the operational costs. This is so because there needs to be installed various base stations in order that it covers a given area. The indoor units are like the DSL modems or the cable modems. On the other hand, the outdoor installation units seem to be cheaper because in such a case, there is no need for the subscriber to be very close to the Wimax base station. Thus there is low cost involved in the outdoor installation but in this case there is a requirement for the professional installation which is done indoors. The outdoor devices are like the size of textbooks and these can be compared to the satellite dish antennae that are found in the residences. The World Interoperability for Microwave Access, i.e., Wimax, which is based on IEEE 802.16 standard, has been developed for the gaining of high speed in the broadband services over the wireless networks and is also expected to cost very less in amount of the charges. This will enable a greater adoption of Wimax by the market which is now very eager to use the broadband and wireless network. The high speed of Wimax will again be an added advantage. Such high speeds and its accessibility have never been provided by any other technology yet. It is an undisputed fact that in the present day context, Wimax is the only standard which provides and is capable of providing the best possible broadband speeds and this also helps in making the dream of a pervasive connectivity come true. Wimax has also to itself the credit of offering two types of applications, one of which is for the fixed applications or users and the other for the purposes of the mobile broadband users. The fixed line Wimax is the best option for the use of broadband in the residences and also for the business purposes. It provides for a point to multipoint enabling access of broadband. On the other hand, the mobile Wimax is good for the mobile applications and provides with the best possible mobility of the networks of the cellular form at the best and true speeds of broadband. Both, the fixed and the mobile services of Wimax give the best broadband services of he highest speed at a lower cost. They also offer omnipresent and higher level of wireless broadband services. The mobile Wimax service is based on the Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) technology. This technology is well known for the inherent advantages of it are in the fields of latency, throughput, advanced antennae support, and spectral efficiency. All these inherent characteristics that the OFDMA technology has leaves behind the present day technology of the wide area broadband network by providing higher performance in the technological field as compared to the other technologies that are an ingrained part of the system of broadband since the earlier times. Now with the evolution of the OFDMA technology, there are various wireless services taking their turn towards adopting the new technology that has evolved in order to provide for the best services at a lower cost. The best thing that has happened with Wimax is that the foremost company in the line of processors is going to be a part of the Wimax technology as it will be providing the key components that are required by the networks of Wimax for the most successful operations. It has already made a delivery for the fixed Wimax solution, Intel® PRO/Wireless 5116 wireless modem, and is now on the verge of shipping a fixed/mobile dual-mode solution, Intel® Wimax Connection 2250. This cost effective solution has been designed to give support to both the standards, the fixed and the mobile networks, and with the easy path for up-gradation from the fixed to the mobile networks and further it is also expected of the technology to accelerate the exploitation of the Wimax networks. Intel being a key component of the Wimax has been strategizing to produce an innovative platform of mobile nature for the Internet broadband connectivity anywhere and at anytime. There is always a growth in the demand for the very high speed internet access of wireless wide area for both, the mobile and the fixed devices. At this point, Wimax proves to be the best choice as it has been designed to meet such requirements of the people as it is an advanced technology solution and is based on the standard which is open. Further more, it does all these and meets the requirements in a comparatively lower cost and also in a way that is flexible. The Wimax networks have been built for the high-speed data and they are also capable of spurring and bring about innovation in the new mobile devices, content and the services. Intel is of the view that Wimax having so many advantages to its credit is very much competent in bringing about a mainstream adoption of the personal broadband. Wimax is the representative of the opportunity of the global connectivity in the highly developed markets of mobile connectivity and also for the developing countries where there is a growth in the demand of the broadband services and where this technology will prove to be helpful in providing affordable services of the broadband. It has been seen that Intel has a vision in its eyes for a world of pervasive connectivity that will be available for all and for that Wimax seems to be the key for its achievement. Thus Wimax will be helping Intel’s vision come true. Wimax has been giving a tough time to Wi-Fi (3) as it is a technology which is much better than the Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi had come to the forefront when people were in great need for a wireless broadband service and thus they were quite happy with it. But they had taken it for granted that Wi-Fi is the best and they had also expected quite a lot from Wi-Fi which was actually not in its capacity. He people had taken it far beyond from what it was expected to do. Like for example, Wi-Fi had never been designed for being used in the outdoors or to be used for large physical areas to be covered. Wi-Fi is basically a low powered technology and is at its best when used for short distances and moreover for the indoor purposes where there are less of echoes and obstacles for it as an issue. The Wi-Fi technology does not provide for any kind of protection from interference and it also cannot be guaranteed by the enterprises that the degree of the services provided by the Wi-Fi network would be good enough when there are lots of people who are using the same frequency. At this point of time there came up the Wimax technology which had nullified all these obstacles and problems that were faced by the subscribers and thus had proved it to be the best in the field of the wireless broadband technology. The Wimax, which is the newest form of wireless broadband technology promises to provide for a very high speed internet access of up to 70 mbps which may spread over distances of about 30 kilometers. The forum of Wimax is getting lots of support from various organizations like the Intel, Siemens, Motorola and the Fujitsu. Wimax can be said to be the future of the wireless broadband service or the next generation of the wireless broadband service as there is a great amount of advantages that it has over the pre-existing and said to be the best of its time, the Wi- Fi technology. One of the advantages that Wimax has over its competitor the Wi-Fi is that quality and the security of service in the Wimax is far better than that of the Wi-Fi which requires a lot of extensions in order to handle the issues. Wimax is capable of supporting the Advanced Encryption System from the very first day and also has the native for the support of quality of the service which makes it a very strong competitor for the voice and video as compared to the IP for the mesh that has been proving to be very good for the campus coverage. Wimax is also suitable and performs in a better manner for the long distance broadband services and for the open spaces where the access of broadband is required. It has been argued in favor of Wimax that t is a technology which will work wonders for the metro network where as compared to this, the Wi-Fi technology can be said to be only a technology of the local network. There has been also the spread of the word that Wimax (4) has promised and will be providing for the spectacular performance in the fields of both speed or capacity and the coverage. The coverage promised is almost for 30 miles and that of the capacity is 70 Mbps. Another promise that Wimax has promised is that of the considerable reduction in the cost of the service as compared to the existing services. There are many Wimax proponents that have been considering the technology of the Wimax because of the support of the companies like the Intel. Intel has also been playing a key role in the Wimax technology. Wimax has also given the assurance to its subscribers about the routes that are the alternate to the landlines for the disaster recovery and the also for some kind of relief from the price and the tyranny of service of the serving carriers of the local exchange. The Wimax also has a very good and high speed component of the mobile services. The Wimax is such a network technology which can mirror the connectivity experience in every place or in fact anywhere in the office. It has been seen that once the services of the Wimax have been made available, it would be very easy to grow the business and to gain very high speed broadband access. This will be possible because they are capable of being borne by the air and thus can be deployed very easily and in a very limited span of time. This may also happen in a day’s time. This less time consuming factor also adds to the various advantages of the Wimax for which it is going to be the best wireless broadband network available in the present time. It will be the future of the broadband technology and will be the leader in this field. There will be a tough competition for the Wi-Fi technology which was regarded to be the best amongst the existing wireless broadband technologies of the present times. Thus Wimax can be very truly said to be the next generation of the broadband wireless technology where there is always a craving for the developments in the field of the wireless network technology and where there is a growing demand for the reduction in the costs of the services. The Wimax has been found to fulfill all the demands of the consumers and also has been found to perform very well in the fields of the wireless technology. Reference: 1.
