Research Paper Research Paper Q1. The importance of experience and emotions (Norman) Emotional design is increasingly becoming a powerful tool for the creation of exceptional user experiences in a number of products. According to Norman (2004), the importance of emotional appreciation during product design can never be overestimated. The author argues that attractive products not only enhance our creativity but also can also expand our mental processes thereby increasing our tolerance of minor difficulties. Generally, for along time product design has been the concern of most scholars in all fields and more so in the development of computer information products. Product design involves aspects of making and coming up with products, events processes as well as services based on the user experience and add quality to the user. It also takes into consideration the immediate environment in order to identify and solve certain problems. It is with this view that emotional appreciation of an event process or product goes along way in improving the quality as well as the usage of the same (Norman, 2004). In my opinion, when people are more enthusiastic about a product designed they are likely to appreciate the product and in the event talk good about it. Through such those developing the product also look at ways of improving it. Through appreciation of the aesthetic and visceral aspects of products it creates emotional satisfaction as well as encourages association with the product (Kausler, and Trapp, 1960). In the market this aesthetic appreciation helps in marketing as more of the product is sold more and more. Emotional appreciation during product design has been also argued that it encourages integration of theories and concepts that are vital in the final development of product. In the companies this has also been seen to result to hard work and dedication as people become more attached to the designs they produce and emotionally feel good about their work. So anyone who has an experience of the products either directly or through the website appreciate this aspects of product design and become emotionally attached to it which therefore spreads to family members ,professionals as well as the media in general. Therefore it becomes very important to look at these aspects of aesthetics in the design of any product. Q2. The philosophers tool kit II (Wittkower) In his attempt to examine the philosophical aspects of iPod mobile audio player, Wittkower (2008) uses 19 chapters written by different authors and philosophers on how iPod is changing the lives of individuals and their sense of community. The philosopher’s toolkit is a comic philosophical thought and methods book as well as a novel. This novel have several chapters with latest revision of philosophical writing making this book further good for the readers understanding of its concepts. This book has six chapters and presents instances of certain kind of philosophical tool in each of them. Chapter one of these books jerks mouldy aptly by unfolding the position of influences in viewpoint. This chapter goes on and discuses several peripheral philosophies example of these being the difference between explanation and reasoning. This seems to be confusing and irrelevant to some extent. This chapter points out how inappropriate logically valid advices might seem to the layman. Finally the chapter explains that the structure of fight regulates its validity and resolutions the pressure by familiarizing the position of truth for the discussion. In chapter two, the hypothetical-deductive technique is categorized though it looks to be perplexing. It says that the result of the trial may in the sturdiest case prove or criticize the thesis. In feebler cases the outcome might offer proof for or against this thesis as well. With HD technique one can prove the truth of a concept; this is even well elucidated in the next chapter. In another contrasting example, the pass of reduction to some extent is quite instructive. In summary, according to these chapters the tool of the philosopher that is describing the importance of arguments in chapter one would be appropriate in future. This philosophy describes what is absent and the interdisciplinary environment of philosophy thus gives room for learning about them and changing their nature of use in the future. Q3. Understanding media (evans) As media continues to expand and technology advances, there have been various understanding of what really is the role of media in the current world. Most people have argued that far much as it happens to be a good thing at times it has led to lose of morality and fall of some celebrities as well as lead immorality when associated with aspects of pornography. In understanding the medial more so social media such as facebook Evans explains that once you identify your market you can use the media for advertisement and reach out to potential customers as well as ensure that the company or any business venture remains profitable. It is also from such interaction that vital lessons can be learned including how to customize your products and increase networking strategies that are all vital in the business progression. In order to create a brand base such interaction with customers via the social media helps to create trust and customer loyalty.(Liana,2010). It is through social media that one does not necessarily have to listen as other will be talking about some aspects that they believe should be talked about you. Therefore not unless you appreciate this fact and join the social media in the dialogue it becomes extremely hard to understand what is out there about you in general. It is with this that most companies have their twitter and facebook accounts in order to be in touch with what is happening and what people are talking about them. It becomes important to understand various media around as it has been argued that all of them are as a result of levies paid through tax that has resulted to even the digital media that is now commonly used. It is only with interaction of such media that we can appreciate the role they play in our society. Though certain aspects of this media may not be appreciated by all is important to note that it generates a lot of revenue that some people argue that even money from pornography is still invested in the same media that we associate ourselves with. Q4. Timeline of the history of computing The history of modern computing is usually varies depending on the different worlds of computing. Generally, the contemporary computing can be traced back to several centuries ago after a serious need to solve various number crunching issues arose. For example, by the late 1880s, the American population had grown so large that it required no less than seven years to tabulate all the U.S census results. Consequently, the growing demand for faster ways of tabulation gave rise to the development of the first punched based computer mainframes. Significant technological advancements have since been witnessed as evidenced by the computing power of our contemporary smartphones. Timeline of the Punched card computing technology 1882: The concept of a steam driven calculating machine was conceived by an English mathematician known as Charles Babbage. Although the project which funded by the British government was a failure, it actually resulted in the building of the worlds fist computer. 1890: Hollerith Herman designed a punch card computer system to calculate the 1880 U.S census thereby accomplishing the task in 3years instead of 7 years that the project required. Herman later established a company that was later known as IBM. 1st generation computers timeline 1939: The giant American computer company, Helwett-Packard (hp) was founded by Bill Helwett and David Packard. The company’s first product was HP200A Audio oscillator which was then widely used as a sound effect generator. 1941: The first programmable calculator with a memory of 64 words was built by the German Aero-nautical Research institute. 1943: The birth of the first generation computers was marked by the building of the first electronic and programmable computers in 1943. Colossus computer was built by the British towards the end of 1943 to aid them crack the German coding system while Harvard Mk I’ which was more of a general purpose programmable computer was build by Harvard university with the help from IBM. 1946: The construction of first digital computer known as ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer) was completed at the U.s ballistic research laboratory. With a capacity of about 100, 000 calculations per second, the computer was mainly used for testing the theories behind hydrogen bomb as well as calculating the ballistic trajectories. 2nd Generation computers 1947: The invention of transistor replaced the previous inefficient valves with much reliable and smaller components. However despite using printed circuits and transistors, these computers were still very bulky and were only owned by governments, large companies and universities. 1948: IBM completed its first selective sequence calculator). This was the first computer to be used in modifying a stored program. 1949: This is widely considered to be the birth of modern computing technology. A team at Cambridge University developed and executed the first stored program on their EDSAC computer. In this regard, EDSAC is believed to be the first fully functional and complete computer. 1950: A pilot computer with about 800 vacuum tubes and mercury delay lines meant for its main memory was developed by the National physical lab in London. 1952: IBM introduced the first commercial computers of its 700 series in large scale. 1953: University of Manchester completes its first fully transistorized computer. 1964: IBM introduces an inexpensive computer with drum storage. The machine is later mass produced with around 2000 installations across the globe. 1974: The first commercial/Consumer computers were developed. 1979: Word processor popularly known as WordStar software was invented by Seymour and Rob Barnaby. 1983: Apple developed the first home computer complete with a graphical user interface. Microcomputers computing history timeline 1990: SLIP/PPP(serial line internet protocol and point to point protocol) which is what got each and every individual on internet through dial-up modems was introduced in this period when broadband was an incomprehensible industry term. 1991: LINUX, a UNIX knockoff that is the world’s largest side-line project for coders was initiated in this year. Graphics coprocessors as well were introduced; it made pulling of graphics data away from the CPU. 1992: Windows 2.0-2.11 which was a more windows and more speed microcomputer was manufactured. It had a desktop icon with a more expanded memory which made it more efficient and speedy. The browser as well in this year enhanced web work for us possible in this year. 1993: Email; electronic mail traces back to the 1960s but took off with web use in the year 1997 in the volume of business mail surpassed that of regular mails. Mobile computing history timeline A mobile computer is a cordless/handheld electronic device that uses artificial intelligence to enhance usage. Mobile computers have been around since as early as the late 1990s but were a reserve of the rich or firms. 2002: A well designed and modified Babbage engine was manufactured. These engines included the difference engine and the analytical engine. In this year the concept of unravelling the storage from processing and finally the ways that data is outputted and inputted was introduced in a more advanced manner. 2007: The apple company introduced the iPhone into the market which marked the beginning of smart and interactive phone production with other firms 2010: iPads which was an important breakthrough in the portable computing industry was introduced. Microsoft announced windows phones to super cede windows mobile with new operating systems irreconcilable with windows mobile and software. Finally, the windows ’95, windows NT and windows ’98 have got various set of applications to perform various tasks hence bring efficiency in mobile computing. Currently (2013): Most of mobile computers such as Galaxy Nexus are complete with networking features and functionalities such as web surfing, email access, video reproduction, article editing and also image editing among many other tasks collective on smart phones.
